If you’re thinking about adding a little Easter bling to your mantel next weekend, these make-it-yourself decorative Easter eggs could be just the thing!
I was actually searching for James Bond-theme props (don’t ask!) in my local Looksharp Store, when I spotted a bag of polystyrene eggs for just $2 and I knew immediately I could turn them into something pretty.
In order to decorate my eggs, I used Semco Paint from Spotlight to turn them from white into pastel perfection (I needed about 4 coats of paint to get the coverage I wanted, but it dried really quickly so got through it in a flash). Then went to town with craft glue, a range of colourful washi tape, white flower embellishments I had hiding in a drawer, gold pen, gold star stickers left over from Christmas, and bronze coloured stamp ink.
Some other decorative flourishes you could use might be stick-on diamantes, ribbon, gold foil, feathers, coloured paper… whatever you can find in the kids craft box or your sewing drawer or the “miscellaneous” cupboard in your kitchen. Go nuts!
I must admit that sitting down and decorating these reminded me of my kindy days, when we used to bring along our painstakingly decorated chicken eggs that had been previously painstakingly hollowed out, so that the teacher could painstakingly string them up to display in the classroom. Did you ever do that?! I guess this little decorative Easter egg project is the same – just less messy + with eggs that won’t crumble if you press your pen into them too hard, haha!
